As a certified personal trainer with an incredible drive and infectious positive attitude, Sarah
Coleman just might convince you to like burpees as much as she does. As The Foundry
Treatment Center’s wellness director, Sarah helps participants form healthy habits around
exercise, food, mindfulness, and every day activities. We recently asked Sarah to tell us more
about how she got started in wellness training, what daily wellness looks like for her, and what
she loves about her work.
When did you know that wellness training was for you?
I love making a positive difference in people’s lives. Fitness is one of the most fun and easiest ways to do it. I originally got bored waiting tables and wanted something different for myself… I answered an ad in the newspaper with zero experience. The owner of the gym, Will, Power and Grace (I totally dug the name), took me under her wing and the rest is history. It was one certification, seminar, and training after the other. I was hooked! The coolest thing about fitness is that it is always evolving so you are constantly challenged and pushed and there is always something new to try.
What does daily wellness look like for you?
I workout everyday in some way or another! I love it. I really can’t get enough. A perfect day would be CrossFit, yoga, and a bike ride or skiing in the winter. I get up super early so that I can fit it all in. I try to mix it up with extra weight training and auxiliary work as well as long dog walks and swimming. Getting outside is SUPER important to me on a daily basis. Gotta get that summer tan going. Sleep and hydration play a big part in my fitness as well. I need a lot of sleep to function properly. Healthy eating is a must. I am mostly Paleo with a few cheats here and there. You can’t run on empty or crap. I also think a huge part of it for me is connecting daily with those I care about and giving back whether that is volunteering or making a friend a meal. I have to remind myself to decompress and turn off every once in a while too. I am currently working on the meditation part of wellness. Also, I LOVE BURPEES!
What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying new wellness activities?
Start small. Go on a walk. Try a bunch of different classes. Get outside. Get 8 hours of sleep. Drink lots of water. Try new healthy simple foods. Cook at home. Use teamwork; get a friend to hold you accountable. Start a challenge with co-workers—nothing is better than a little friendly competition.
What do you enjoy most about working with The Foundry participants?
The change I see in them. It is incredible to see how their attitude and drive changes as well as their hair and skin and so much more. I love watching them grow and use new tools to work through their own shit. The changes I see on the physical fitness side of things are super rewarding. I love to see them get hooked on new things. I want to challenge them and change their lives but they, in turn, are changing mine.
What are you most proud of about your work?
Teamwork! Working on something that takes a lot of people’s opinions and effort into consideration and seeing a final outstanding product. I also love it when residents come back to say hi and tell us what they are doing to stay sober. Seeing the impact that The Foundry has had on them in a positive light is AWESOME. And, of course, when they LOVE the FUN wellness activities we plan for them. It makes me super proud to see them light up.
Favorite spot in Steamboat?
This is the hardest question of them all. I love Steamboat. Most of the time I love wherever I am at the moment. I know that sounds cheesy, but I really do. I love the tops of the mountains, I love being in the greenness of the aspen trees, and I love my deck in the afternoon and my hot tub in the morning. I love being on a ride with my man or in the swimming hole with my dog. I love the gym. I love my home. Most of all, I love being surrounded by love, light, and happiness.
Last book you couldn’t put down?
Oh man! I am terrible. I usually LOVE to read but have been hooked on a silly TV show, Shameless. I can’t stop watching. I am actually looking forward to the end so I can get on with my life… HA! However, I am a Twilight, Hunger Games, and Harry Potter girl all the way!
What makes you happiest?
This one is unfair… So many things! My sweet girl (dog) Bernie, holding hands with my Scott, a great workout, special time with friends and family, my CrossFit family, spring rolls, hot sauce, dark chocolate, the sunrise, adventures, smiling and making others smile back, changing lives daily! I also really like having no shoes on and there is really nothing better than a happy golden with it’s head out the car window.
